A Decade of Digital Empowerment

Mairead's journey into senior tech education began unexpectedly in 2010 when she was asked to help her grandmother navigate a smartphone at a Galway community centre. That moment sparked something—recognizing the frustration many older adults felt with technology, she completed a postgraduate diploma in Adult Education at University of Galway and began volunteering at local libraries.

Within five years, she'd established the Galway Senior Tech Workshops programme. Since then, she's trained over 3,000 older adults across Galway and surrounding counties in practical smartphone and tablet use. She's worked with Age Action Ireland and the Galway Community Network, developing tailored curriculum materials that respect the learning pace and concerns of older learners.

What drives Mairead is the tangible impact. Watching someone video call their grandchildren for the first time. Seeing someone manage their banking independently. Her approach is fundamentally about removing jargon, building confidence, and proving that age is never a barrier to digital competence.
